What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
Search engine optimization (also known as SEO) is the act of making a website
come up higher in the search results of major search engines trough designing,
writing, and coding. It ensures that your web pages are accessible to search engines
and focused in ways that help improve the chances they will be found.
For many organizations SEO has become a fundamental part of the marketing plan,
regardless of whether it is called SEO, search engine optimization, search engine
positioning, ranking, registration, and submission or something completely different.
The industry term is SEO.
Why Optimize for the Search Engines?
Compared to banner advertisements and other forms of online marketing there is
no doubt that search engine optimization is by far the most efficient and cost–effective
investment you can make to secure your site's future success.
When done properly, optimizing your site for the search engines will help to:
• Give your website continued high exposure for months and years
to come
• Find potential customers in the most economic and effective
way
• Get full value for your website investment now and in the future
• Produce large amounts of qualified traffic
• Increase the length of site visits
• Assist in branding your company and/or products
• Consistently generate quality leads for your company's services/products
• Become a marketing form that is accessible 24/7
In summary, search engine optimization is not merely a good idea; it is crucial
if there is to be a rational correlation between the money and energy you have
already invested in your web presence and will continue to spend.
Why Spaming the SE is Bad Idea?
In the old days, the name of the game was trying to trick the engines, and to
basically stick your keyword phrases any place you could on your site, as many
times as you could. Thankfully, this generally doesn't work any more (with Google
at least), nowadays the search engines are constantly on the lookout for websites
attempting to spam their indexes, and if caught, you can expect stiff penalties
often resulting in getting your site removed and even blacklisted. Submitting
multiple times is useless too, will NOT give you higher rankings or make you more
popular.
Those who take extreme measures to rank well on search engines are likely to be
labeled spammers. There are some clear no-nos, but it is mainly an issue of intent
and proportion.
• No hidden text.
• No stuffing pages, graphic images, etc. with irrelevant words.
• No doorway pages,
• No multiple domains or subdomains with essentially the same
content.
• No "sneaky" redirects.
• No cloaking.
• Linking to "bad neighborhoods. "
There is no denying that these techniques can get good results if you don't get
caught, but is it worth the risk to your business?
